Read Between the Lines

Women are notorious for being confusing, and it's no wonder. We say something but mean something else, don't say something which definitely means we're saying something, and say part of something in hopes that the rest will magically be figured out. One word sums this up, expectations! I don't know how many times I've wanted to tell my husband how I feel but think, no way! He is an all powerful mind reader who should know how I'm feeling about this and take the best course of action to make me feel better. "Darling wife, I know you have been with our daughter all day. Please let me spend the evening bathing and rocking her while you put your feet up and relax." "Whitney Dearest, since we have been apart so much this week, let's spend the day together with no distractions."

That was a fun little daydream, now back to reality. This is not how it works ladies. There is a word to describe these types of thoughts. Selfish! You heard me right. Who do these thoughts revolve around? Me. Who benefits from these situations? Me. Who sulks around or acts irritated when the magic thoughts don't come true? Me. Do you see the pattern? Expectations are when you place desires out of your control onto someone else with the personal understanding that they will come true. That's not sounding very realistic to me, but we do it everyday. We do this with our spouse, kids, friends, coworkers, and even the dog. Now that's sad. To top it all off, we let other people down and then have the nerve to act shocked at their disappointment.

We need to learn to speak what we mean and not expect people to read between the lines. I shouldn't focus on sending subliminal messages to my husband in hopes that he will fulfill my every desire. Instead I should be focused on how I can serve and honor him as his helpmate. Christ is the only One who will never let us down. We can expect Him to be exactly who He says He is in the Scripture and know that He will always fulfill His promises to us.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. -Ephesians 3:20-21
