Young At Heart
Kids are always in a hurry to grow up. They can't wait to drive, go on dates, get a job, get married, etc. While I wanted those things, I have never been in a hurry to get any older. It's a Peter Pan syndrome of sorts, and while I am still young in the grand scheme of life, I have already hit the point where I hate birthdays. I almost cried on the morning of my twentieth birthday because I had to officially say goodbye to my teenage years and hello to a deteriorating life of responsibility, old age, and death. (Hey, I never said I'm not dramatic at times.) At 21, I argued with the eye doctor that I could see just fine and did not need glasses. At 23, I had a bike wreck which took days to recover from instead of hours. At 24, my knees and back began to hurt if would stand for too long. Now at 26, I seem to have lost half of my brain cells and memory after having a baby. I have always been able to do anything I set my mind to, but I can see that as I age things are going to get harder. That thought scares me.
Have you ever been scared of aging? We know that God has not given us a spirit of fear, so how can we overcome this? 2 Corinthians 4:16 says, "We do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day." Our body and mind are going to age. That is just a fact of life due to our sin. There is a part of us that never has to age though; our spirit! Here is what Stormie Omartian says regarding our spirit's daily renewal, "It is not something you have to strive or strain to make happen. It happens automatically when you are in the Lord's presence. As you pray and speak words to Him of worship and praise, He fills you afresh with His Spirit. And with His Spirit always comes freedom from stress and anguish, and release from self-doubt and fear. In His presence you find refreshment, rejuvenation, and restoration."
Being fearful of aging is a sign that I am too focused on this world and all it has to offer. My focus everyday should be to enrich and renew my spirit. That is the part of me that matters most and the part that will live forever. Let's strive to see each new year as an opportunity to grow closer with the Lord and to give testimony to His goodness, love, grace, and mercy toward us.
